EVALUATION OF AEROMONAS SPP IN AQUATIC ENVIRONMENTS AND ANTIBIOTICS SUSCEPTIBILITY PATTERN IN THREE SELECTED LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS IN IBADAN OYO STATE
Abstract
This research focused on evaluating the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Aeromonas spp. isolated from Pond soil and pond water in selected areas of Ibadan, Oyo State. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated Aeromonasspp from pond soil and water in three selected local governments in Ibadan, Oyo State. Pond soil and water samples were collected from selected fish farms and preserved with icepacks before transportation to the laboratory. Pure isolates of Aeromonas spp. were obtained from the samples and subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing using antibiotic sensitivity discs. Additionally, bacterial isolates were sub-cultured for further analysis. The result reveal the prevalence of Aeromonasspp in the sampled soil and water bodies from the three selected LGA, Ido (water 7.7%, soil 7.7%), Oluyole (water 11.5%,) and Ibadan Southwest (0% in both soil and water body) indicating contamination and the potential for waterborne diseases. The isolated Aeromonasspp is multidrug resistant in pond soil than water, which will make it difficult to choose appropriate antimicrobials for treatment if this pathogen infects or contaminates the production system. Also The result reveals the antibiotic resistance profiles of various antibiotics in the tested samples of the pond soil and water, denoted by their resistance percentages (R). The antibiotics tested, include GEN: Gentamicin, ENF: Enrofloxacin, STR: Streptomicin, CEF: Ceftriaxone, FLF: Florfenicol, and
CIP: Ciprofloxacin, among the tested antibiotics, such as Enrofloxacin, Streptomicin, Florfenicol and Ciprofloxacin displayed most resistance in the samples, indicating a concerning level of resistance to these antibiotics. This high level of resistance suggests potential overuse or misuse of antibiotics in the environment where the samples were collected, contributing to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These results imply that while certain bacteria in the samples were susceptible to these antibiotics, others demonstrated resistance. The presence of partial resistance underscores the complexity of antibiotic resistance patterns and highlights the need for targeted antibiotic stewardship efforts to combat resistance effectively.
