COVERAGE OF WORLD HUMAN RIGHTS DAY BY THE PUNCH AND LEADERSHIP FROM 2022 TO 2024
Abstract
This study examined the coverage of World Human Rights Day by The Punch and Leadership newspapers from 2022 to 2024 using content analysis with purposive sampling. A total of 90 editions were analyzed, 45 from each newspaper. The study focused on the frequency, nature, and placement of reports. Findings revealed 134 relevant stories, 56 from The Punch and 78 from Leadership. Both newspapers gave limited prominence to the event. The Punch mostly published straight news (85.71%) with no front-page stories, while Leadership published 51.28% straight news, with only 3.85% on the front page. Most reports appeared on inside pages (65.67%) and lacked human interest elements. The study recommends that newspapers give more attention to human rights issues to increase public awareness
