THE ROLE OF NDLEA IN DRUGS PREVENTION AND CONTROL: A CASE STUDY OF BAUCHI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explores the role of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in drug prevention and control within Bauchi Local Government Area (LGA), Nigeria. The research aims to identify the NDLEA's contributions to drug prevention, examine factors leading to drug proliferation, and assess the challenges faced by the agency. Utilizing an exploratory research design, the study incorporates literature reviews, interviews, focus groups, case studies, and historical documents to provide a comprehensive analysis.Bauchi LGA, with its diverse ethnic and religious population, presents unique challenges in drug control. The study sample includes 169 NDLEA officials, with a calculated sample size of 119 using the Yaro Yamane formula. Data was analyzed using SPSS, employing descriptive statistics to evaluate frequency tables and percentages.Findings reveal a generally positive perception of the NDLEA's drug prevention programs, with respondents acknowledging the agency's effective collaboration and educational campaigns. However, concerns persist regarding the adequacy of support for individuals with addiction issues and the overall effectiveness of enforcement efforts. Factors contributing to drug proliferation include socio-economic conditions, inadequate education, insufficient law enforcement resources, and the presence of drug trafficking networks. Challenges faced by the NDLEA include limited funding, insufficient staff training, coordination issues, corruption, and community resistance.Recommendations include increasing funding for drug prevention programs, enhancing staff training, improving inter-agency coordination, combating corruption, and engaging the community. Addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and policy adjustments could enhance the NDLEA's effectiveness in drug prevention and control in Bauchi LGA.
