Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Wearing bras has been a common practice among women for centuries, but its impact on breast health remains a topic of debate. Objective: To investigate the relationship between bra wearing and breast health among women in Ilorin, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 women aged 15-30 years. Participants completed a questionnaire on bra-wearing habits and breast health symptoms. Breast examinations were also conducted to assess breast tissue and nipple-areola complex. Results: The study found a significant association between bra wearing and breast pain, bra strap groove, and breast tissue density. Women who wore bras for more than 12 hours a day were more likely to experience breast pain and have denser breast tissue. Conversely, women who did not wear bras or wore them for less than 8 hours a day had healthier breast tissue and fewer symptoms. Conclusion: This study suggests that prolonged bra wearing may have negative effects on breast health among women in Ilorin. Women are advised to practice good bra hygiene, wear bras for shorter periods, and consider alternative breast support options to promote breast health. Recommendations: * Further research on the impact of bra wearing on breast health * Public awareness campaigns on proper bra-wearing habits * Alternative breast support options for women * Regular breast self-examinations and clinical breast examinations Limitations: * Cross-sectional design, cannot establish causality * Limited generalizability to other populations * Further studies needed to confirm findings
