DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A FAULT REPORT AND MAINTENANCE SOLUTION FOR ELECTRICAL POWER AND WATER SYSTEM IN FCAH&PT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study presents the design, development, and implementation of a comprehensive web-based
fault reporting and maintenance solution aimed at addressing inefficiencies in the management of
electrical and water-related faults within the Federal College of Animal Health and Production
Technology (FCAH&PT), Ibadan. The primary goal was to replace the existing manual reporting
process, which was prone to delays, miscommunication, inconsistent record keeping, and lack of
accountability with an automated, real-time platform capable of streamlining communication
between stakeholders, enhancing transparency, and improving overall maintenance response. The
system was designed using the Object-Oriented Design (OOD) methodology and implemented
with the MERN (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, and Node.js) stack to ensure scalability,
modularity, and ease of future integration. It employs a role-based access control structure that
differentiates functionalities for reporters, administrators, and technicians, ensuring that each user
interacts with the system according to their specific responsibilities. Data for system requirements
was obtained through direct observation of current maintenance workflows and informal
interviews with administrative staff, technicians, and students to capture end-user needs and
operational challenges. Key system modules include fault submission via an intuitive web form,
administrative assignment of technicians, real-time status tracking, automated email notifications,
and post-resolution feedback collection. The platform also maintains a centralized database to store
and analyze fault history, enabling data-driven decision-making for preventive maintenance
planning. Evaluation of the system involved functional testing, usability trials, and performance
assessment with a representative group of end users. Results demonstrated a marked improvement
in fault response times, a reduction in miscommunication, higher fault resolution tracking
accuracy, and increased user satisfaction compared to the manual approach. Additionally, the
solution enhanced institutional accountability by providing a transparent and auditable record of
maintenance activities. The research concludes that the developed system effectively addresses the
operational gaps in the existing process, offering a robust, efficient, and user-friendly solution for
fault management in institutional settings. It is recommended that the system be deployed across
all departments of the college for maximum impact. Future work should focus on integrating
mobile application support for improved accessibility, implementing AI-driven technician
assignment to optimize workload distribution, and expanding system compatibility for multi
campus deployment.
