Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effect of Senna alata leaf extract on liver function enzymes in the serum and liver histology of broiler chicken. A 42 -day feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of dietary supplementation of aqueous Senna alata leaf-on liver function enzymes and liver histology of broiler chickens. 200 day old Abor acre plus broiler chickens were used for the experiment in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The birds were allotted into five dietary treatments of 40 birds each and were replicated five times with eight birds per replicate. Treatment 1 was the control, it had no dietary supplementation of Senna alata leaf extract in their water. Treatment 2, 3, 4 and 5 had inclusion levels of 5, 10, 15 and 20ml dietary supplementation of Senna alata leaf extract respectively. At the end of experiment data was collected on 2 birds/replicate were fasted for 12 hours then bled via wing jugular vein. Blood was transferred to plain tubes, allowed to clot. Serum Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), activities were determined spectrophotometrically (BioTedk synergy Housing commercial kits Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) using SAS 2005. Results of the experiment show significant It can be concluded from this study that; inclusion of Senna alata leaf extract in the water to broiler chicken didn’t have any negative effect on the liver function enzymes and the liver histology of broiler chicken.
