Abstract

Abstract The increasing prevalence of waterborne pathogens necessitates the research for effective, eco-friendly antimicrobial agents. This study investigated the antimicrobial potential of Alchornea cordifolia leaf extract against Psuedomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis isolated from contaminated water source in Calabar, Nigeria. Ethanol and Methanol extract of A. cordifolia were assessed for antimicrobial activity using ager well diffusion, dicks diffusion, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays. Results reviewed significant antimicrobial activity against both pathogens, with MIC values ranging from 12.5 -50mg/ml. P. aeruginosa was more susceptible to methanol extract(MIC:12.5-50mg/ml), while P. mirabilis was more susceptible to ethanol extract(MIC;25mg/ml). Dicks diffusion assays should zoom inhibition diameters of 14-22mm for methanol extract and 10-18mm for ethanol extract. Phytochemicals analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic acid, saponins and tannins. The study's finding suggest that A. cordifolia leaf extract possess potential antimicrobial properties, making them suitable natural agents for water treatment and management these extract could serve as alternatives to synthetic antimicrobials, reducing environmental pollution and promoting sustainable water management practices.
