PROXIMATE, PHYTOCHEMICAL, VITAMIN C AND MINERAL COMPOSITION OF ENANTIA CHLORANTHA
Abstract
Enantia chlorantha, a medicinal plant traditionally used in various cultures, was
evaluated for its nutritional and phytochemical content. The analysis revealed the
following mineral content per 100 grams: calcium (367.00 mg), copper (0.202 mg),
potassium (241.95 mg), zinc (2.440 mg), and magnesium (148.20 mg). Phytochemicals
identified in the plant include alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and
terpenoids. The proximate analysis showed the following composition: moisture
content (6.50%), ash content (7.78%), crude protein (2.38%), crude fiber (50.0%), fat
content (20.0%), and carbohydrates (10.58%). Additionally, vitamin C was found to be
present at 2.73 mg per 100 grams. These results suggest that Enantia chlorantha is rich
in essential minerals, phytochemicals, and vitamins, making it a valuable resource for
both nutritional and pharmacological applications. The high levels of calcium, iron, and
potassium indicate potential benefits for bone health, alleviating anemia, and
supporting cardiovascular health. Furthermore, the presence of flavonoids and phenolic
acids suggests antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
