EFFECT OF DIETARY CLOVES (SYZYGIUM AROMATICUM) SUPPLEMENTATION ON LINEAR BODY MEASUREMENT AND THERMO-TOLREANCE OF GUINEA PIGS (CAVIA PORCELLUS)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary cloves (Syzygium aromaticum)
supplementation on the linear body measurements and thermo-tolerance of Guinea pigs (Cavia
porcellus). A total number of thirty (30) weaned guinea pigs aged eight (8) weeks were assigned
into five (5) treatment groups in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The experiment
lasted for eight (8) weeks. The levels of supplementation of cloves were 0g, 7g, 14g, 21g and 28g
as treatment 1, 2,3,4 and 5 respectively. Weekly parameters were taken on body measurements
included head- tail length, head length, ear length, girth length, forelimbs length, hindlimb length
and head circumference. The thermoregulatory traits measured included rectal temperature, pulse
rate, respiratory rate and heat stress index. Results showed that supplementation of cloves into the
diets of guinea pigs significantly(p
