HEAVY MINERAL ANALYSIS OF RIVER SEDIMENT (A CASE STUDY OF OGBESE RIVER, AGO ADULOJU, SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA)
Abstract
This study investigates the heavy mineral composition of sediment samples collected from the Ogbese River in Ago Aduloju, Ado Ekiti, to evaluate the potential geological and environmental implications of these minerals. Sediment samples were systematically collected along the river course and analyzed using advanced techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), to identify and quantify the heavy minerals present. The results indicate a diverse assemblage of heavy minerals, with significant concentrations of ilmenite. zircon, rutile, and garnet. These findings reveal variations in mineral distribution related to the geological formations in the area, indicating processes of weathering, transport, and sedimentation that influence the mineralogy of the river sediments. The study contributes to understanding the heavy mineral resources of the region and highlights the importance of sediment analysis in assessing the environmental impacts of mining and land use practices
