THE ROLE OF FILM PRODUCTION AND INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM IN AWARENESS AND CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING, A STUDY OF "OLUTERE"
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Human trafficking is a pervasive global issue that continues to affect millions of individuals, with Nigeria identified as both a source and transit country for trafficked persons. Despite efforts by law enforcement agencies, non-governmental organizations, and international bodies to combat this crime, it persists due to deep-rooted socio-economic challenges, systemic corruption, and weak policy enforcement. The role of media in addressing this crisis has gained prominence, particularly through investigative journalism and film production. This study seeks to explore how these two powerful storytelling mediums work together to raise awareness and drive advocacy against human trafficking, using Òlòtūré as a case study.
Guided by Social Responsibility Theory, Cultivation Theory, and Framing Theory, the research aims to assess how investigative journalism uncovers the realities of human trafficking and how film production translates these findings into compelling visual narratives that engage a wider audience. Employing a qualitative research design, the study will utilize content analysis, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions to examine audience reception, media framing, and the ethical considerations involved in representing trafficking victims.
This study will investigate the extent to which Òlòtūré influences public perception, generates discussions around human trafficking, and contributes to policy dialogues. It will also assess the challenges faced by investigative journalists reporting on trafficking and the potential risks associated with film portrayals, including sensationalism and ethical dilemmas in victim representation.
