PIDGIN ENGLISH AND INFORMATION DISSEMINATION: A STUDY OF CALABAR MUNICIPALITY DWELLERS
Abstract
Abstract
This research titled Pidgin English and Information Dissemination: A study of Calabar Municipality Dwellers, aimed to investigate how usage of Pidgin English in information dissemination is appraised by dwellers of Calabar Municipality. To realize these objectives, three research questions were formulated to guide the study. Dennis McQuail’s 1987 Democratic Participant Theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. The study’s population consisted of all individuals who reside within the ten (10) wards making up Calabar Municipality and a sample of 200 respondents was selected using the purposive sampling technique. A Close-ended questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed in tables and simple percentages. Results obtained from study findings indicated amongst others that the extent of Pidgin English effectiveness in information dissemination remains low. It was therefore recommended amongst others that Training programmes for communicators and local media that focus on effective use of Pidgin English should be developed, ensuring that information is conveyed clearly and accurately to improve its effectiveness in dissemination.
