THE ECONOMIC HISTORY OF NNEATO CLAN IN UMUNNEOCHI LGA, ABIA STATE, NIGERIA: 1970-2024
Abstract
This study examines the economic history of Nneato, a rural community in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria, from 1970 to 2024. Employing a mixed method approach, the research combines primary sources, including archival materials, oral interviews with community members and local leaders, and field research, as well as secondary sources of data, comprising books, journals, newspaper reviews, and files. The study also utilizes qualitative and statistical analysis to triangulate the data and provide a comprehensive understanding of Nneato's economic development. The research investigates the impact of government policies, such as the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) and Operation Feed the Nation, on the community's economy, and explores the roles of agriculture, quarrying, and trade in shaping the community's economic history. The findings reveal that Nneato's economy has undergone significant transformations, driven by a complex interplay of internal and external factors. The study identifies lessons for sustainable economic development in rural communities, highlighting the need for policy interventions that take into account the community's economic history, cultural context, and development aspirations. The research contributes to the literature on rural economic development in Nigeria and Africa, providing empirical evidence for development interventions and informing policy decisions. The findings have implications for scholars, policymakers, development practitioners, and community leaders seeking to promote sustainable economic development in rural communities.
