IMPACT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT ON RURAL TRANSFORMATION IN NIGERIA. A CASE STUDY ZARIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KADUNA STATE
Abstract
Abstract
This research project examines the impact of local government on rural transformation in Nigeria, using Zaria Local Government Area as a case study. The study explores how local governments contribute to the development of rural areas through infrastructure provision, health services, education, agriculture, and economic empowerment programs. It seeks to assess the effectiveness, challenges, and overall performance of Zaria Local Government in transforming rural communities within its jurisdiction. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and existing government records. The findings reveal that while the local government has made notable efforts toward rural development, these efforts are often hindered by issues such as corruption, inadequate funding, poor policy implementation, and lack of community participation. The study concludes that for rural transformation to be truly impactful, there must be enhanced accountability, increased funding, capacity building, and stronger community engagement in local governance. Recommendations are offered to improve the role of local government in achieving sustainable rural development
