Abstract

This research investigated the impact of political mobilization on voter behaviour during the 2023 gubernatorial election in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The study aimed to address two primary research questions: the extent to which political mobilization and political education affect voter behaviour. The main objective was to examine how these factors shaped the political behaviour of voters in the recent election. The research design was an ex post facto which is a non-experimental research method used to explore possible relationships between variables after events have already occurred. The theoretical framework was grounded in Social Mobilization Theory, which posits that collective action and community engagement significantly enhance political participation. The findings indicated no significant relationship between political mobilization and voter behaviour, nor between political education and voter behaviour during the election. These results challenged the assumptions that mobilization and education directly translated into increased voter engagement, suggesting a need for further exploration of the underlying factors influencing voter behaviour in the context of Akwa Ibom State. Based on these findings, the study recommends enhancing political education by expanding voter education programs in schools and communities to empower informed decision-making. Additionally, it is crucial to build trust in governance by promoting transparency and accountability to restore confidence in the electoral process. Finally, implementing media literacy programs will educate citizens on evaluating information sources, thereby combating misinformation and enhancing informed participation. These recommendations aim to address the challenges identified in the study and foster a more engaged and informed electorate in Akwa Ibom State.
