DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATION DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM AND INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR PHARMACEUTICAL WHOLESALE ORGANIZATION
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Pharmaceutical wholesale organizations operate within a highly regulated
environment that demands accuracy, traceability, and responsiveness in inventory and
procurement decisions. This project presents the design and implementation of an
Integrated Decision Support System(DSS)and Inventory Management System (IMS)
tailored for a pharmaceutical wholesale seiting in Nigeria. The system was developed
using modern web technologies including Next js,PosfgreSQL,and Tailwind CSS,and
implemented through a modular architecture encompassing inventory control,
supplier/customer management,sales tracking,and data-driven decision support.
Quantitative results demonstrated significant improvements in operational
performance. For example, the system accurately tracked an inventory value of
N875,000 across products such as Paräcetamol,Amoxicillin,and Ibuprofen,while
generating real-lime reorder alerts based on Economic Order Quantity (EOQ)and
Reorder Level (ROL)calculations.EOQ for a product with annual demand of 2,350
units,an ordering cost of*150,and a holding cost ofN100 was computed as 84 units.
The system automatically triggered reorder alerts once stock fell below the calculated
ROLof200 units, based on a lead time of 5 days and an average daily usage of40 units.
The DSS module integrated predictive analytics to generate reorder recommendations,
visualize stock trends,and identify low-stock scenarios.Test results showed 99%
accuracy in inventory updates and successful generation of alerts and analytical
dashboards.Sales modules recorded real-time transactions such as 100 units of
Paracetamol at N375 per unit and 50 units of Amoxicillin at N900 per unit;resulting in
a combined revenue of N82,500.The project concluded that integrating DSS with IMS
enhances operational efficiency, minimizes inventory waste, ensures regulatory
compliance,and supports proactive,data-informed decisions.This solution is
particularly viable for small and medium-scale pharmaceutical distributors in
emerging markets facing challenges of stock mismanagement, regulatory complexity,
and digital transformation.
