GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF ROCK IN SAMARU SHEET 54 SW GUSAU, ZAMFARA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study entails the geotechnical properties of rocks in the Samaru Sheet, located in the southwest of Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria. The area belongs to the Nigerian Precambrian Basement Complex and primarily consists of migmatite, granite, and gneiss rock units.
Fieldwork comprised routine sampling of rock and geological mapping, followed by laboratory analysis to determine the main geotechnical properties such as Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS), Specific Gravity, Porosity, Bulk Density, and Water Absorption. Laboratory tests yielded high UCS between 81.6 and 112.4 MPa, specific gravity between 2.69 and 2.76, and low porosity between 1.6% and 2.4%.
Such observations indicate that the studied rocks are mechanically competent, dense, and low-permeability rocks, thereby are suitably suited for different engineering purposes such as foundations, road construction, and aggregates. The study provides important information to facilitate geotechnical decision-making for engineers, geologists, and planners, thereby yielding safer and cost-effective infrastructure development in Zamfara State.
