LITHOFACIES AND INFORMAL PALYNOLOGICAL ZONATION OF SEDIMENTARY SUCCESSION PENETRATED WITHIN THE INTERVAL OF 2190FT. AND 4110FT. OF WELL “S” IN THE OFFSHORE DEPOBELT, NIGER DELTA.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Over time, foraminifera, pollen and nannofossils have been used to determine age and biozonation which is useful in petroleum exploration activities in the Niger Delta. The purpose of this study was to determine the absolute age and zonation of the sediments penetrated by the well using Palynology. Thirty-three (33) ditch cutting samples from the offshore Niger Delta were analyzed and lithozones were delineated. Slides were prepared from the ditch cutting samples by using a light transmitting microscope. The abundance and diversity of the palynormorphs were identified by standard procedures and were used to establish the zones. Light grey shale, with silt intercalated with fine to medium grained whitish sandstones were identified. Ninety seven (97) palynormorph species were Identified and the established zonation scheme; Evamy et al. (1978) using the appearance of the first and last occurrences of marker species identified two zones of Late Miocene to Early Pliocene age (P860 zone) and Early Pliocene (P870 zone) with bioevents Quantitative base Nymphaeapollis lotus and Base occurrence of Retistephanocolpites gracilis respectively.
