Abstract

The growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly energy has increased interest in hybrid renewable energy systems that integrate multiple sources to enhance reliability and efficiency. This study investigates the design, modeling, and performance evaluation of a standalone photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy system supported by lithium-ion battery storage. The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science buildings at Edo State University, Iyamho, were used as the case study. Real load demand data and meteorological data obtained from NASA and the study area were incorporated into MATLAB/Simulink simulations. A boost converter equipped with a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm was implemented in the PV subsystem; an horizontal-axis wind turbine provided additional generation during periods of low solar activity. The lithium-ion battery further improved system stability and autonomy. The results show that the proposed hybrid configuration effectively mitigates intermittency, enhances energy availability, and achieves cost-efficient operation. These findings underscore the technical and economic feasibility of deploying such systems in rural and semi-urban regions of Nigeria, thereby supporting sustainable energy development.
