Abstract

Abstract This study investigated staff awareness and compliance with Nigeria's legal depository laws in the Ebonyi State Ministry of Justice, Abakaliki. The research aimed to bridge the knowledge gap in empirical studies on legal depository laws in Ebonyi State. A descriptive research design was employed, surveying 132 staff members from the Ministry of Justice and National Library of Nigeria, Abakaliki. Questionnaires were used for data collection, and the data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed a poor level of awareness among staff regarding key requirements of the laws, despite understanding the laws' purposes. Compliance levels were also inadequate, with only registration of Ministry publishers with the National Library for standard numbers meeting requirements. Staff identified challenges, including inadequate awareness programs, lack of synergy with National Library staff, absence of Ministry policy, inadequate punitive measures, and nonchalant attitude of publishers. The study recommends targeted interventions to enhance staff awareness, compliance, and enforcement of legal depository laws. These include developing awareness programmes, strengthening institutional policies, enhancing partnerships, establishing clear guidelines, and implementing punitive measures. This research contributes to the understanding of legal depository laws in Nigeria, providing valuable insights for policymakers, library administrators, and professionals. The findings inform strategies for improving awareness, compliance, and preservation of Nigeria's intellectual heritage.
