PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF ORAL ADMINISTRATION OF D-RIBOSE L-CYSTEINE ON THE LIVER OF ADULT FEMALE WISTER RAT FOLLOWING MANGANESE TOXICITY.
Abstract
Manganese is an essential trace element, but excessive exposure can cause liver damage through oxidative stress. D-Ribose L-Cysteine (DRLC) is a precursor to glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, and may protect the liver against such toxicity. This study investigated the protective effect of oral administration of DRLC on the liver of adult female Wistar rats exposed to manganese. Rats were divided into four groups: control, manganese only, DRLC only, and manganese + DRLC. Treatments were administered orally for 21 days. Liver function was assessed through biochemical markers (ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin) and histological examination. Results showed that DRLC administration significantly improved liver enzyme levels and reduced tissue damage compared to rats treated with manganese alone. These findings suggest that DRLC has a hepatoprotective effect and may be useful in preventing manganese-induced liver injury.
