A STUDY OF PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPACT OF TEENAGE PREGNANCY ON GIRL CHILD IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOL OF ISEYIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OYO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the psychosocial impact of teenage pregnancy on girl-child and social relationships in selected secondary schools within Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State. With four specific objectives guiding the research, a descriptive research design was adopted to investigate the phenomenon. The study, which involved 100 randomly sampled respondents, employed data analysis techniques such as frequency and simple tables. The findings highlight the adverse implications of teenage pregnancy on girl-child, including heightened dropout rates and academic challenges. Additionally, shifts in social interactions and instances of social isolation and stigma among pregnant teenagers are observed. Factors contributing to teenage pregnancy, such as insufficient access to comprehensive sex, peer pressure, societal attitudes, and economic factors, are explored. Notably, respondents recognize the significant influence of these factors on teenage pregnancy rates. Furthermore, potential strategies to mitigate teenage pregnancy among the girl-child are identified. Comprehensive sex programs, gender equality promotion, and support services like counseling and mentorship emerge as essential avenues for intervention. This research offers valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders seeking to address teenage pregnancy issues effectively. By understanding the multifaceted impacts and underlying factors associated with teenage pregnancy, targeted interventions can be developed to support the girl-child's and overall well-being.
