Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the presence and types of pathogenic microorganisms on ophthalmic equipment used in selected eye clinics within Owerri Urban, Imo State, Nigeria. The purpose was to determine the potential risk of infection transmission associated with routine eye examinations and procedures. A cross-sectional experimental design was employed, and samples were collected from commonly used instruments such as ophthalmoscopes, tonometers, trial lenses, slit lamp surfaces, and chin rests. Standard microbiological procedures—including swab collection, culturing, biochemical identification, and antimicrobial sensitivity testing—were used to isolate and identify microorganisms.
