Abstract

This study focuses on the characterization and potential usage of Agbabu natural asphalt deposit for highway pavement construction. Located in Ondo State, Nigeria, the Agbabu deposit is a significant source of natural asphalt, offering a promising alternative to conventional petroleum-based bitumen. The research aims to assess the physical and chemical properties of this natural asphalt and determine its suitability for use in highway pavement, aligning with the standards set by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Works. Comprehensive laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate various properties of Agbabu natural asphalt, including penetration, ductility, softening point, specific gravity, viscosity, flash and fire points, and Marshal stability. The results were meticulously compared with the specifications required by the Ministry to ensure compliance and performance. Key findings revealed that Agbabu natural asphalt meets most of the required standards, indicating its potential as a viable construction material. While most properties of Agbabu natural asphalt met the required standards, the softening point and specific gravity were slightly below the specified ranges. This indicates a need for potential modifications or blending with other materials to enhance performance, particularly in hotter climates where a higher softening point is crucial The study demonstrates that Agbabu natural asphalt is a promising material for highway pavement construction, with several properties aligning well with national standards. By addressing the minor deficiencies through material modification, Agbabu natural asphalt can provide a sustainable and cost-effective solution for infrastructure development in Nigeria. This research paves the way for further exploration and utilization of local natural resources in construction projects.
