Abstract

This study investigates the influence of domestic violence on the academic performance of primary school pupils in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area of Ondo State. Utilizing a survey-based descriptive research design, data was collected through a structured questionnaire administered to primary school pupils. The research aimed to identify the relationship between domestic violence and pupils' academic outcomes, examining variables such as attendance, performance, and class participation.Key findings indicate that domestic violence significantly impacts the academic performance of primary school pupils. Pupils exposed to domestic violence exhibit higher rates of absenteeism, lower academic achievement, and reduced class participation. The study also highlights the emotional and psychological challenges faced by these pupils, which further hinder their educational progress. Factors such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and behavioural issues were prevalent among the affected pupils. The research underscores the necessity for comprehensive support systems within schools to address the needs of pupils experiencing domestic violence. Recommendations include the implementation of counselling services, teacher training on recognizing and responding to signs of domestic violence, and collaboration with community services to provide holistic support for affected families. Future studies could explore long-term impacts of domestic violence on educational attainment and the effectiveness of intervention programs in improving academic outcomes for these pupils.
