REMOVAL OF HEAVY METALS (ZINC AND IRON) FROM EASTERN OBOLO SURFACE WATER USING CARICA PAPAYA AS A LOW-COST ADSORBENT
Abstract
This study evaluates the removal of zinc and iron ions from Eastern Obolo surface water using Carica papaya seed powder as a low-cost adsorbent. The papaya seeds were processed into fine powder and used in batch adsorption experiments. The results revealed significant reductions in metal concentrations, with performance influenced by contact time, dosage, and initial concentration. Adsorption fitted the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating effective metal uptake. The study demonstrates that papaya seed powder is a sustainable and affordable option for improving water quality in rural communities.
