Abstract

Hyperglycemia, an inordinately high blood sugar level is a feature of diabetes mellitus and can occur through a lack of insulin production, insensibility to insulin, or both. With an emerging epidemic of hyperglycemia-related syndrome and insufficiencies in conventional drugs, a growing demand for bioactive compounds derived from a natural source for therapeutic use is emerging. Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme derived from Ananas comosus (pineapple), has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and metabolic-regulating properties, making it a promising candidate for hyperglycemia management. In this study, wild-type Drosophila melanogaster (Canton S strain) were bred and treated with varying concentrations of sucrose (10%, 15%, 20%, and 30%/5g diet) and bromelain (5.0, 10, and 20 mg/kg diet) to determine the appropriate duration and dosage. A coadminstration of sucrose (30%/5g diet) with bromelain (5.0 and 10 mg/kg diet) was done to evaluate bromelain protective effects against sugar-induced metabolic stress. The results revealed that a high-sucrose diet significantly increased (p
