Abstract

ABSTRACT Hypertension is defined as a systolic Blood Pressure equal to or above 140 mmHg and/ or diastolic Blood Pressure equal to or above 90 mmHg. This study, is aimed at evaluating the Renal function in hypertensives patient in Madonna University teaching hospital (MUTH). An ethical approval letter was obtained from the hospital to collect samples from the study subjects. Informed consents were obtained from subjects after several meetings on their clinic days. A total number of two hundred individuals, 100 apparently healthy individuals and 100 hypertensive patients in Madonna university teaching hospital (MUTH) were recruited for the study. Determination of serum creatinine was done using Modified Jaffe's slot reaction method, Determination of urea was done using Urease Berthelot's method, Determination of Electrolytes was done using Ion Selective Electrode. Data generated from this study were analyzed using SPSS 26 for windows 10. there was a significant difference (ρ value < 0.05) in the serum creatinine(μmol/l), urea(mmol/l), potassium(mmol/l) and sodium concentrations of hypertensives (134±2.73; 10±0.84; 3.7±0.14; 144±2.62) when compared to the control (97±20.91; 5±2.01; 4.3±0.51; 140±2.74) respectively. However, there was no significant difference (ρ value < 0.05) between the chloride levels of hypertensives (103±2.71) and control groups (102±2.90). This study found that Creatinine, urea and sodium levels are elevated in hypertensive patients. Also there was an increase in creatinine and urea levels in older age groups especially males and this can be attributed with the increased body mass of older males compared to females.
