Abstract

A lubricant is a substance interposed between two surfaces in relative motion for the purpose of reducing the friction and wear between them. The primary purpose of lubricating engine oil (lubricants) is to reduce friction between moving part of various equipment or machinery. The purpose of engine oil blending is to be able to adjust the lubricant variety, improve the lubricant quality, and ultimately get the desired lubricant. In this case, high performance multi grade engine oil was produced by first, testing the specific gravity of oil with the aid of hydrometer and thermometer. 5 liters of base oil was measured out and poured into a stainless steel pot which serves as reactor, after which 1 liter of paraffin oil (100N) was added. 0.42 (7%) kg of additives including, the melted Aspen and dissolved tackifier was added into the mixture and was stirred properly until a homogenous mixture was obtained. The mixture was subjected to heat for proper reaction of the base oil with the additives to a temperature of 70°C. Furthermore, 0.5kg of viscosity index improver was added into the mixture and stirred continuously for a period of.5 (five) minutes. Later, 5 grams of dye was also added to the mixture and stirring continued. At the temperature of 70°C, the mixture was removed from the heat. The product was allowed to cool to room temperature and it was about 30°C, after which, the product was filtered to remove traces of impurities. Sample of the product was later analyzed. Quality control test was carried out. The result obtained showed that the product was within the standard specification of (SON)- standard organization of Nigeria as shown in table 4.1. Hence Aspene additive is a good viscosity modifier in the blending of multi-grade Engine oil, when blended with other additives.
