Abstract

Trichomonas vaginalis is an anaerobic, flagellated protozoan parasite and the causative agent of trichomoniasis. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of Trichomonasvaginalisamong pregnant women antenatal attendees at Federal Medical Centre, Wadata, Makurdi.A total of 100 urine samples of pregnant womenantenatal attendees was collected and processedusing standard microbiological techniques. Socio-demographic information such as age and risk factors were obtained from all participating women within the age range of 18years and above using structured questionnaire. All data collected was analyzed using the StatisticalPackage for Social Sciences version 18 (PASWstatistics 18). Of 100 pregnant women examined, 7 were observed to be infected and this gave an overall prevalence of 7.00 % within the study population. The highest rate of infection was observed in pregnant women between 26-30 years (10.53 %), followed by those who were between 36-40 years (7.14 %) and least was from 20-25 years (6.90 %), while no infection was observed from pregnant women between the 31-35 years (0.00 %). A slightly higher infection rate in pregnant women in their first trimester (10.42 %) was observed, followed by those in their third trimester (6.67 %), while the least was observed from those in their second trimester (2.70 %). Higher infection rate among pregnant women who were traders was observed (7.94 %)and the least was observed from the unemployed pregnant women (3.85 %), while no infection was observed from among the public servants (0.00 %).The rate of infection was observed to be higher in pregnant women with Primary School Certificate (25.00 %), followed by pregnant women with secondary school educational background (6.45 %) and the least was observed from pregnant women with tertiary educational background (3.51 %) while all the infected cases observed were among pregnant women who used water system toilet (8.14 %).The prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis infection among antenatal attendees at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Wadata in Makurdi showed a prevalence infection rate of 7.00 % among the examined population. There should be routine screening of trichomoniasis among pregnant women and women of reproductive age in order to curb out the disease.
