Abstract

This study investigates the implications of domestic violence on the health status of adolescents in Abeokuta, Ogun State, utilizing a mixed-methods approach to capture a comprehensive perspective. Key findings indicate that domestic violence significantly affects both physical and mental health outcomes among adolescents. Data was collected from a stratified random sample of 200 adolescents aged 15-23 from various schools and communities in Abeokuta, employing the Implications of Domestic Violence on the Health Status of Adolescents Questionnaire (IDVHSAQ). The reliability of this instrument was confirmed through a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.78, indicating satisfactory consistency. The statistical analysis revealed a p-value of .000, with findings leading to the rejection of the first null hypothesis (Ho1). This suggests notable differences in health issues related to domestic violence experiences. Additionally, the socio-economic status of parents was examined. The rejection of the second null hypothesis (Ho2) reinforces a significant association between lower socio-economic backgrounds and heightened instances of domestic violence impacting adolescents, again indicated by a p-value of .000. This points to the broader socioeconomic factors that exacerbate domestic violence scenarios, leading to adverse health outcomes for affected youth. Furthermore, the evaluation of various interventions and awareness programs highlighted their effectiveness in mitigating the prevalence of domestic violence. The rejection of the third null hypothesis (Ho3) also demonstrated significant differences, affirming that targeted initiatives can meaningfully reduce domestic violence incidences and promote healthier environments for adolescents, as evidenced by a p-value of .000. Overall, the implications of these findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced intervention strategies and support systems to address domestic violence and its detrimental effects on adolescent health in Abeokuta. This research emphasizes the importance of addressing domestic violence not only as a social issue but as a public health concern that requires immediate attention to improve the wellbeing of adolescents in Abeokuta.
