INTERROGATING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF OIL EXPLORATION IN THE NIGER DELTA REGION OF NIGERIA: LEGAL PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research critically examines the environmental consequences of oil exploration in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, with a focus on the legal frameworks governing environmental protection. The study explores the ecological degradation and socio-economic challenges resulting from oil- related activities, including pollution, loss of biodiversity, and displacement of local communities. It evaluates the effectiveness of existing national and international legal instruments, enforcement mechanisms, and the role of regulatory bodies. Using a doctrinal method, the research analyses statutes, case law, and international treaties to assess the adequacy and implementation of environmental laws in Nigeria. The study finds that while legal provisions exist, enforcement remains weak due to institutional lapses, corruption, and lack of political will. It concludes with recommendations for legal reform, stronger enforcement, and community engagement to ensure environmental justice and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
