THE IMPACT OF INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT ON RECREATIONAL TOURISM ACTIVITIES IN AKAMKPA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Recreational tourism has emerged as a vital sector in Nigeria's economy, contributing
significantly to national development. Akamkpa Local Government Area, with its rich
cultural heritage and natural attractions, has tremendous potential for recreational tourism
growth. However, the area's tourism industry faces challenges, including inadequate
infrastructure and facilities. Effective development and management of recreational facilities
are crucial for enhancing tourism participation and promoting local economic growth. This
study aimed to evaluate the facilities promoting recreational tourism in Akamkpa Local
Government Area. Specifically, the objectives were to identify and describe existing facilities
that promote recreational tourism in the study area, examine challenges in facilities
development, and explore the relationship between facilities development and participation in
recreational tourism with a view to making recommendations for improvements. The study
employed a qualitative and quantitative research methods approach, utilizing interviews,
observations, and questionnaires to collect data. A sample size of 400 was selected, with 373
responses analyzed. The research hypothesis was tested using the Pearson Product Moment
Correlation Coefficient. The findings revealed a statistically significant relationship between
available recreational facilities and participation in recreational tourism. This suggests that
infrastructure availability plays a crucial role in influencing recreational tourism engagement
in Akamkpa. Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening stakeholder
synergy for facility management and maintenance. The results inform strategies for
enhancing recreational tourism in Akamkpa, highlighting the importance of infrastructure
development in promoting tourism participation.
