STRESS ANALYSIS OF A WATER TANK STANCHION AT THE NEWLY REMODELED AJAYI CROWTHER UNIVERSITY HOSTEL
Abstract
This research focuses on the stress analysis of a water tank stanchion using classical
analytical methods to evaluate its structural stability under static loading. The objective
was to determine the critical stress points and ensure the safe performance of the
stanchion supporting an elevated water tank. The study includes a review of relevant
literature on stanchion behavior under load and structural design considerations for
elevated tanks. The methodology involved resolving internal forces and bending
moments using fundamental principles of mechanics and structural analysis. Calculations
were carried out manually to assess axial and bending stresses at various sections of the
stanchion. The results indicated notable stress concentrations at the base and mid-height
of the support due to combined loading conditions. These findings highlight the
importance of proper sizing, material selection, and joint detailing to ensure structural
safety and longevity. The study serves as a reference for low-cost, effective structural
analysis approaches in contexts where advanced simulation tools are unavailable
