EFFECTS OF THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN ON NIGERIA’S POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
This research explores the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on Gongoni company and its broader implications for Nigeria’s political and economic development. Drawing on data from 145 survey respondents, the study reveals that Gongoni was significantly affected, with 80% of operations reporting a drop in revenue and about 40% of employees losing their jobs. These setbacks were linked to supply chain disruptions, declining customer demand, limited cash flow. Beyond Gongoni, the lockdown disrupted business activities across Nigeria, contributing to rising unemployment, slowing economic progress, and straining political stability. The study also found that the lockdown had a noticeable impact on individuals’ social well-being, with 70% of respondents reporting reduced social interaction and increased feelings of isolation. In response to the crisis, Gongoni played a supportive role in public health campaigns and COVID-19 prevention efforts. The findings point to the need for stronger support systems and collaboration among government agencies, businesses, and communities to help companies recover and to improve resilience at both individual and national levels. This study provides useful insights for policymakers and business leaders working to understand the real impacts of the pandemic and to plan more effective responses in future emergencies.
