DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A SYSTEM FOR DETECTION OF SNIFFING ON A NETWORK
Abstract
The detection of sniffing activities on a network is a critical aspect of maintaining the integrity and security of communication systems. This project focuses on the design and implementation of a system that effectively detects sniffing attempts on a network. Sniffing, a common technique used by attackers to intercept data packets, poses significant risks to the confidentiality and security of sensitive information. The proposed system utilizes advanced monitoring techniques and algorithms to identify abnormal network behavior indicative of sniffing activities. The system architecture is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing network infrastructures, employing real-time analysis to monitor data traffic. Key features include packet inspection, anomaly detection, and alert mechanisms that notify network administrators of potential sniffing attempts. The system also includes a robust user interface for managing detection settings, reviewing detected incidents, and generating comprehensive reports. Through rigorous testing in a controlled environment, the system demonstrated high accuracy in detecting various sniffing techniques, including passive and active sniffing. The implementation of this detection system provides an essential tool for organizations to safeguard their networks against unauthorized data interception, ensuring the privacy and security of communications. This project contributes to the field of network security by offering a practical solution for detecting sniffing, which is adaptable to different network environments and scalable to meet the needs of both small and large organizations. Further enhancements could explore the integration of machine learning algorithms to improve detection accuracy and adapt to evolving sniffing methods.
