AMELIORATIVE ROLE OF ZINGERONE ON ALCL3/D-GALACTOSE-INDUCED NEUROBEHAVIOURAL AND HISTOMORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE HIPPOCAMPUS OF ADULT MICE
Abstract
This study investigates the ameliorative role of zingerone on neurobehavioral and histomorphological changes induced by aluminum chloride (AlCl3) and D-galactose in the hippocampus of adult mice. Twenty-eight Wistar mice weighing between 20– 35 grams used for this study. The animals consisted of 4groups, each comprising of five to seven mice. Group 1: control group animals received water and food only. Group 2: aluminum chloride + d- galactose group only. Group 3: aluminum chloride + d-galactose + zingerone group. Group 4: aluminum chloride + d-galactose + donepezil group. At the end of 8 weeks period, all the animals from each group were sacrificed a day after the end of the administration with anaesthesia by intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital followed by cervical dislocation. The brains of these animals were removed, evaluated to ascertain the effects of the extracts administered. Spontaneous alternation behavior in the Y-maze is used to asses’ short-term spatial memory. Exposure to Aluminium Chloride plus D-galactose only (AlCl3/D-Gal) significantly impaired short-term memory deficit as compared to the control (p < 0.01). Upon treatment with Zingerone (AlCl3/D-Gal + Zin100), there was significant improvement compared with the non-treated group (AlCl3/D-Gal) (P
