Abstract

This study looks at how urbanization has affected Akure South Local Government Area in Ondo State's ecological footprint. The growth of metropolitan areas has a substantial impact on resource consumption and environmental sustainability. The research examines trends of resource consumption, population growth, and changes in land use in Akure South using a mixed-methods methodology. Research reveals that as a result of urbanisation, there is a greater ecological footprint due to increased deforestation, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emissions. In order to prevent environmental degradation while allowing for urban growth, the study emphasises the necessity of sustainable urban planning and policy measures. Land Use Land Cover (LULC) Classifications showed significant changes over the studied periods. The analysis revealed a progressive transformation from natural landscapes to built-up areas. In 1984, there was a predominance of vegetation and agricultural land, but by 2014 and 2022, there was a marked increase in built-up areas and corresponding decrease in natural vegetation. In light of urbanisation, suggestions are made for improving ecological sustainability. The study's Land Surface Temperature analysis shows a gradual rise in surface temperatures from 1984 to 2022, primarily in urbanized areas, compared to vegetated areas. Population Density Analysis revealed significant population growth and concentration in urban areas between 2014 and 2022. The study included population density maps showing the spatial distribution of population changes. The chapter analyzes NDVI maps from 1998-2022, revealing a consistent decline in vegetation cover, especially in urban expansion areas, highlighting the significant environmental impact of urbanization in Akure South LGA.
