ROLES OF CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS STUDIES IN CURBING MORAL DECADENCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ODEDA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OGUN STATE

This study examined the roles of Christian Religious Studies in curbing moral decadence among secondary school students in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. The population used for this study consisted of all the students of senior secondary schools in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State while the targeted respondents comprised of one hundred (100) students randomly selected from five (5) senior secondary schools in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. The research instrument used for the study was a structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of simple percentage and frequency counts. The findings revealed that there are students understanding of the concept and essence of Christian religious curbing moral decadences which implies that Christian Religious studies is design to raise a generation of people who can think for themselves in order to curb moral decadence and Christian Religious studies is design to raise people that can respect the views and findings of others so as to curb moral decadence. Christian Religious studies is initiated to raise people that can respect moral values stated in the national aims as good citizens so as to curb moral decadence. Based on the result of the findings, the following recommendations were made: moral education should be introduced as a compulsory course/subject from primary to tertiary institution in order to inculcate moral values, character and civil responsibilities into students. To eradicate moral decadence in Nigeria and achieve objective freedom for the people, the government should strive to ensure the de-criminalization of political leadership in the Nigerian society.
