THE IMPACT OF AUDIO-VISUAL METHOD IN THE ACQUISITION OF FRENCH VOCABULARIES AMONG JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ODEDA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OGUN STATE
Abstract
This study examined the impact of the audio-visual method on the acquisition of French vocabularies among junior secondary school students in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. The study was motivated by the persistent poor performance of students in French vocabulary due to the continued use of conventional teaching methods. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted. The population consisted of junior secondary school students in selected public schools within Odeda LGA. A sample of students was divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught using audio-visual instructional materials, while the control group was taught using the conventional method. Data were collected using a French Vocabulary Achievement Test (FVAT). The results were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, and t-test. Findings revealed that students exposed to the audio-visual method performed significantly better than those taught using the conventional method. The study concluded that the audio-visual method enhances students’ understanding, retention, and acquisition of French vocabularies. It was therefore recommended that French teachers incorporate audio-visual materials into their teaching to improve students’ academic performance.
