EFFECTS OF REAL ACADEMIC EXPERIENCES ON THE INTROSPECTIVE LEVEL AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BIOLOGY IN ABEOKUTA
Abstract
This study investigated the effects of real academic experiences on the introspective level and academic performance of secondary school students in Biology in Abeokuta. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, involving 150 senior secondary students randomly selected from three schools. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and students’ Biology scores. The findings revealed that engagement in real academic experiences, such as practical experiments and field activities, significantly enhanced students’ introspection, critical thinking, and understanding of biological concepts. Additionally, students exposed to these experiences performed better academically compared to those taught using traditional methods. The study concludes that incorporating real academic experiences in Biology teaching improves both reflective thinking and academic achievement. Recommendations include integrating more practical and experiential learning opportunities into the secondary school Biology curriculum.
