EVALUATION OF THE POTENTIAL OF BIOFERTILIZER FROM POULTRY DROPPINGS IN THE GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF NIGERIAN 40-DAYS BEANS
Abstract
Due to the rapid/geometric increase in the world's population the demand for high food
production has become a vital reason for the application of fertilizers on crops to improve yield
and also to improve soil quality texture and composition. This study was carried out to evaluate
the potential of biofertilizer from poultry droppings in the yield and growth performance of
Nigerian 40-days beans. The poultry droppings were collected from the Wurukum, Makurdi
Benue State. The potential of the biofertilizer produced was evaluated in the growth of beans and
growth parameters such as plant height, number of leaves, leaf length and leaf width were
assessed. A total of eight micro and macronutrients were determined from the biofertilizers
produced in this study. They were Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu) and Lead (Pb) which were
the micronutrients. Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Sodium (Na) and Nitrogen (N) which
were the macronutrients. The result showed that the biofertilzer produced from the combination
of Poultry droppings, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and azotobacter had significantly higher Zn, Fe,
Mg and Na contents than biofertilizers from the other respective groups (P
