PARENTAL INFLUENCE ON CAREER CHOICE OF UNDERGRADUATES AND IT'S EFFECT ON THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: ( A CASE STUDY OF ADEYEMI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ONDO)
Abstract
This study examines the influence of parental guidance on the career choices of undergraduates and its subsequent effect on their academic performance, focusing on Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. The research investigates how parental expectations, support, and involvement shape students' decisions regarding their fields of study and career paths. It further explores the correlation between parental influence and students' motivation, engagement, and academic outcomes. Using a case study approach, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews from a representative sample of undergraduates. Findings reveal that positive parental involvement significantly enhances students' academic performance by fostering clear career goals and sustained motivation. Conversely, excessive parental pressure or misalignment between parental expectations and students' interests may negatively impact academic achievement. The study underscores the importance of balanced parental support in nurturing students' career development and academic success.
