Abstract

This study investigated an assay of the presence of Salmonella typhi in human serum of student of Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo, Nigeria. The study seeks to achieve the following objectives: to propose a laboratory test method for detecting S. typhi; to isolate and identify Salmonella typhi from serums of Imoploy students; to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella typhi in serums of Imopoly students and to compare the efficacy of the assay method with existing methods. The study is a descriptive cross-sectional survey that sampled a total of 20 students of Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo out of which 17 were chosen for the study. The result showed that the rate of infection of Salmonella typhi among the sampled students population is high (65%) with male students within the age of 18-26 years constituting the highest rate of infection. The study recommended enlightenment programmes on basic rules of hygiene among students of the Polytechnic to reduce the rate of infection and for public health agencies o base plans for control of the disease on the predisposing factors which may be useful in rapid diagnosis and treatment of the predisposing factors which may be useful in rapid diagnosis and treatment of enteric-fevers, and in planning the infection intervention programs in the study area.
