Abstract

ABSTRACT Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious and potentially fatal infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which primarily affects the lungs but can spread to other organs of the body. Despite significant advances in medicine, TB continues to be a major global health concern, particularly in developing countries where access to timely diagnosis and treatment is limited. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for effective disease management and control. However, in many rural or resource-constrained settings, there is a shortage of medical experts capable of diagnosing TB based on symptoms and laboratory results. This study presents the development of an Android-Based Expert System for Tuberculosis Disease Diagnosis, designed to assist healthcare practitioners and patients in the early detection of TB. The system employs a rule-based reasoning approach, utilizing a knowledge base built from medical expert input and verified clinical data. The expert system allows users to input symptoms such as chronic cough, chest pain, night sweats, fever, and weight loss. Based on the inference engine and decision rules, the system analyzes the symptoms and generates a probable diagnosis, along with recommendations for medical consultation or further testing. The application was developed using Java programming language within the Android Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE), and SQLite database was employed to manage patient records and diagnostic rules. The system was tested using real-world cases, and results showed a high level of accuracy and consistency compared to diagnoses made by medical professionals.
