FACTORS INFLUENCING THE UTILIZATION OF CHARMS BY SEX TRADERS IN LAFIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Sex trade has been recognized as a global issue, with many individuals, especially from marginalized communities, being coerced or voluntarily entering the profession due to socio-economic pressures. Furthermore, the use of charms, which are often seen as tools for protection and success, has become an important cultural practice in many African societies, including Nigeria. Despite this, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how these factors influenced the use of charms among sex traders, particularly in Lafia. This study examined factors influencing the use of charms by sex traders in Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design to sample 400 respondents through a multistage sampling procedure. First, six wards were randomly selected from the 13 wards in Lafia, and respondents were chosen using proportional sampling. A structured questionnaire consisting of closed questions was administered to collect data. In addition to the questionnaires, 19 in-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted for more detailed insights. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as (frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations) for the quantitative data. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to assess relationships between variables. The qualitative data from the interviews was analyzed using content analysis. Findings revealed that the use of charms among sex traders in Lafia was influenced by socio-cultural factors such as peer pressure, social stigma, family background, and ethnic beliefs. Economic factors including poverty, job scarcity, and financial pressures, as well as psychological factors like low self-esteem and the desire for control, were also significant motivators. Respondents noted that charms were used for protection, attracting clients, and coping with societal rejection. Also the study suggested that awareness campaign by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to sensitivze the public on the negative effects of sex trade and the use of charms for promoting the trade.
