BEHAVIORAL ATTITUDE OF HEALTHCARE WORKERS TOWARDS HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT SERVICES IN LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, LAGOS STATE.
Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the behavioural attitude of healthcare workers towards the Health Information Management (HIM) department services at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. The specific objectives include assessing the current behavioural attitudes of healthcare workers towards HIM services, identifying factors influencing these attitudes, evaluating the impact of these attitudes on HIM services' effectiveness, and proposing strategies to improve healthcare workers' collaboration with the HIM department.
A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The study population included healthcare workers at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, such as Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, and Medical Laboratory Scientists who interact with the HIM department. Stratified sampling was used to ensure representation from all professional groups. Using the Yamane formula, a sample size of 317 healthcare workers was selected, with 291 respondents (91.8% response rate) participating in the study. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS version 25.
The findings revealed that the majority of respondents strongly agreed that the HIM department provides timely and accurate services (64.3%) and that the nature of their job influences their interactions with the HIM department (62.9%). Furthermore, most respondents strongly agreed that miscommunication with the HIM department leads to errors in patient management (78.4%). This highlights the critical role of HIM services in healthcare delivery and the importance of improving collaboration.
The study concludes that enhancing healthcare workers' collaboration with HIM services is vital for improving healthcare delivery. Recommendations include organizing regular HIM workshops, establishing a feedback mechanism, increasing HIM staff, arranging joint meetings, and promoting recognition of HIM contributions to improve collaboration and service efficiency.
