IMPACT OF DISEASE CODING AND INDEXING ON QUALITY HEALTHCARE SERVICE DELIVERY AT UNIOSUN TEACHING HOSPITAL, OSUN STATE.
Abstract
The study focused on the impact of disease coding and indexing on quality healthcare service delivery at uniosun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Osun State. The aim was dertermine the nature of disease coding and indexing at University Teaching Hospital ( UNIOSUN), assess the impact of disease coding and indexing on quality healthcare services delivery. A descriptive survey research design was used in the methodology. A sample size of 41 health information management officers was used for the study, total enumeration techniques of respondents was selected for the study in the institution selected 41 questionnaires were administered in which 38 copies was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using frequency with simple percentage analysis using SPSS versions 20.
The finding revealed that larger number of the respondent agreed that there use of disease coding and indexing systems improves healthcare provider communication (52.6%). Disease coding and indexing support healthcare policy development. Standardized disease coding and indexing systems enhance healthcare data analysis (39.5%). Disease coding and indexing facilitate healthcare accreditation and certification. The implementation of disease coding and indexing systems improves healthcare provider satisfaction. Disease coding and indexing support healthcare patient engagement. Standardized disease coding and indexing systems enhance healthcare data interoperability. Disease coding and indexing facilitate healthcare population health management. Accurate disease coding and indexing reduce healthcare waste.
The research concluded that the implementing robust clinical coding and indexing systems is crucial for enhancing healthcare delivery. Such systems facilitate accurate data collection, which is essential for identifying disease patterns, allocating resources effectively, and formulating public health strategies. Moreover, they support research initiatives that can lead to improved treatment protocols and patient care. It is recommended that inadequate funding and limited trained personnel, addressing these issues through targeted interventions can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, adopting and strengthening clinical coding and indexing practices should be a priority for healthcare institutions, including UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, to improve health outcomes.
It is recommended in the study that were suggested to provide a solution to the identified problems.Increase Investment in Training Programs Regular training for healthcare staff, especially in coding practices, will improve the accuracy and consistency of diagnostic data.Adopt Advanced Coding Software: Implementing state-of-the-art coding software will facilitate more efficient and accurate coding, reducing human error and ensuring standardized processes.
