THE EFFECT OF CAFFEINATED DRINKS ON LIVER ENZYMES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present study was designed to investigate the effects of caffeinated drinks on tenzymes. Four healthy Sprague-Dawley albine rate weighing (140-143g) were used for this study, one was fed on standard diet and kept as control (-ve).The other three were each orally administered with power horse, Nescafe and Lipton (black tea) daily for 2 weeks. After two weeks of treatment, blood simples were collected from each rat via carchac puncture method for liver enzyme estimation. The result of the study showed that the caffeinated drinks induced an elevation of liver enzymes Aspirate Amino transférase (AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphate (ALP), Total Bilirubin (T.B) and conjugated Bilirubin (C.B) after two weeks of treatment. The data illustrated that power horse was more effective in its action in liver enzymes, followed by Lipton (black tea) and to less extend Nescafe. The different action of caffeinated drinks on liver function could be attributed to the different mbure of their ingredients.
