Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the factors influencing the career path choices of students at Achievers University, Owo. Recognising that career decisions significantly shape an individual’s future, the research seeks to understand the interplay of personal, academic, familial, and external factors such as labor market trends in shaping these choices. The study adopted descriptive research design, which entails quantitative data collection gathered through structured questionnaire. A sample size of 150 students was selected from various colleges of the university using stratified random sampling to ensure representation across disciplines. Data analysis revealed that while personal interest and academic performance play a considerable role in career choice, external influences particularly parental guidance, societal expectations, and perceived job market opportunities also significantly impact decision-making. The findings underscore the need for enhanced career guidance services within the university and greater awareness initiatives to support informed and independent career decisions among students. The study concludes with recommendations for institutional and policy-level interventions aimed at aligning students’ aspirations with realistic and fulfilling career paths.
